Christmas shopping doesn't have to be dull and uninspiring, especially if you join one of our breaks incorporating a visit to one of the UK's Christmas markets.

This year, why not try a weekend to the award–winning Christmas Market in Durham, one of the finest in the country, which forms the centrepiece of the city's three–day Christmas Festival.

Also included in this County Durham Double is a day out at the internationally–famous open–air living museum at Beamish, all decked out for the season in its Edwardian and Victorian Christmas finery.

Saturday   We set off by coach from a pick–up in your local area and travel direct to Beamish, a whole 19th–century town brought to life and set in 300 acres of the finest County Durham countryside. The installations are not replicas but the real thing, some original to the site, others transported brick by brick from the surrounding area. You'll see the Edwardian Town, Pit Village, Home Farm and Pockerley Old Hall as they would have been during an Edwardian or Victorian Christmas. More like time travel than a museum, Beamish is the experience of somebody else's lifetime! In the late afternoon/early evening, we will leave Beamish for your hotel where you will be able to enjoy a leisurely dinner and your overnight stay.

Sunday   Breakfast the good old–fashioned English way, and then today's excursion to Durham for the Christmas market. You will find a large, heated Craft, Gift and Food Marquee on Palace Green between the Cathedral and the Castle, as well as outside stalls too. Last year there were over 200 stalls to enjoy, as well as many more in the Regional Producers Market located in the cathedral cloisters. Visitors are welcome to pop into the awe–inspiring cathedral itself, 900 years old and one of the finest in Europe. There is a host of other attractions and entertainments to suit all ages; carolling, brass bands, fire eating, juggling, live reindeer, seasonal storytelling and children's crafts to name a few. We will set off for home in the mid to late afternoon.

Here are some example hotels or similar ones that we use for this break, actual availability may change with the travel date you choose.

Some hotels have an additional supplement per person, as shown below. Supplements are stated for the break (not per night)
